A high-ranking Russian army officer has been declared dead following an blast in Moscow, according to official statements.
The event occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
The committee stated that one possible explanation points to the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Site of the Incident
Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is said to be in a southerly district of the capital.
Media coverage suggest the detonation happened in a vehicle lot near a residential building.
Pattern of Assaults
Since the beginning of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military personnel have been attacked within Moscow.
This most recent event follows other notable incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a informant earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are rarely officially confirmed as a matter of policy.
The war has been marked by shadowy operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.
The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
