Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new initialism emerged a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
