American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland.

The FAA notice was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to consult airlines about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It led several air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
