Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state memorials until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the plan.
A prominent representative familiar with the talks indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No location appears as home now and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk comes, the dread comes with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area indicated additional fatalities had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the southern area, medical staff stated.
