Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing undesired offerings could be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, are valued at around €800,000. They will be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, but the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents are said to be stored in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been gathering dust for years.

A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but some insight emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the oddest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This unique auction represents a novel approach to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a time in office.
