A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
