Understated Elegance or a Tone-Deaf Choice? The Color Dubbed 'Cloud Dancer' Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Hello! I'm incredibly excited to discover what color is set to be 2026. What's the scoop?

Brace yourself, as every year beginning in 1999, Pantone chooses a defining hue. This selection is a reflection of the current cultural mood—informing everything from our collective sentiment and our wardrobe selections to home decor. The previous year's hue was the rich tan "Mocha Mousse," following the soft and warm "a fuzzy pastel."

The latest choice, however, is even more puzzling. It is "a billowy white," which Pantone calls a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, remarked that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … enabling all colors to stand out."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… hold on, just white? Is this a prank? Does white qualify as a distinct hue?

How does one describe the color of clouds? Milk? Even though many view white as a color, all color is fundamentally a range of visible light. It appears in a box of crayons, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

Whether Pantone is pulling our leg is more difficult to ascertain. The company states, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, avoids sensory overload, embodies understated style, and radiates subtle elegance.

Feedback online, however, has not been as kind. Several voices have accused Pantone of being completely "out of touch." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee called it "disappointing." Others have compared it with subtle advocacy of certain ideologies seen in other media.

Right, hopefully they're blissfully unaware that this isn't the best moment to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... Therefore, how might someone who doesn't follow a runway apply this trend in daily life? I just painted my kitchen ceiling white, does that count?

Yes, that certainly counts. The same goes for your earbuds, sink, or ceramic plate.

It's interesting you mention fashion shows, as many this season's presentations have been exceptionally bright, featuring plant-based fabrics on the runway.

White ensembles were present, as always, in luxury shows—from elegant blouses to collared dresses. High-profile figures have also been photographed in monochromatic white attire at public appearances.

The good news is: you likely already own pieces in this "understated" designated shade. As Pressman, Cloud Dancer "signifies a more sustainable choice for the eco-conscious," which essentially suggests skipping the requirement for fresh products at all.

FINALLY, a style movement for the deeply unmotivated. An empty canvas, so to speak. A haven of calming neutrality within the noise. Okay, I get it. Do you intend a all-white theme for your personal style?

Not a chance. Have you ever tried to get out red wine stains from a light garment? I'm not seeking additional cleaning headaches in 2026.

I do have a pair of now off-white comfort shoes, and such staples never go out of style.
